About Stockton & Thornaby Canoe Club

Are you ready to become part of the STCC family but want to know a bit more about us?

We’re a volunteer run private members club affiliated to British Canoeing, the governing body of paddle sport in England. We promote all aspects of the sport:  white water, touring, sea kayaking and general leisure paddling on lakes and placid water. Our home and clubhouse is at the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre and we operate coached session there throughout the summer. The club has been introducing people to the sport for over 20 years!!

Our members are passionate about introducing new people to the sport, it’s what we love and we want you to love it too. Our introductory/beginner sessions are delivered by our excellent coaches and are part of the British Canoeing Coaching Scheme. So, whatever your paddling aspirations, we can get you there!

Throughout the year the club organises regular paddles locally and a number of weekend trips further afield, typically camping or staying in hostels. One of our most anticipated white water trips is to the French Alps to paddle on glacial melt water.

During the summer months our regular Wednesday evening club meetings are at the White Water Centre. Typically, some members will make use of the white water course, there will be various groups on the lagoon undertaking coaching towards British Canoeing paddle sports awards and others will have a social paddle on the Tees.

In the winter the club meetings retreat to a local swimming pool on alternate Wednesdays where we teach rolling and also introduce new people to the sport over the winter months.

We currently have more than 150 members drawn not just from Teesside; some members come from as far afield as North Yorkshire, County Durham and Newcastle.

The club owns a substantial fleet of boats including general purpose kayaks, white water kayaks, touring canoes and sea kayaks which are available for hire during our coached sessions. All necessary equipment is provided and we are able to accommodate around 30-40 people using club equipment on club nights.

Experienced members arrange white water river trips and sea kayaking trips throughout the year.

We can be contacted through email which can found on the Contact us page.

Here’s what a few of our members have to say about us

I’m Vaughan Morris and I’m 67 years old. I joined this club a few years ago when I retired from working with a plan to learn to paddle up and down quiet rivers in order to enjoy my free time outdoors, stay fit and active and to meet a few like-minded people.

What I found far exceeded my expectations.

An eclectic, committed, capable and friendly group of people who not only taught me to paddle safely but whose enthusiasm for the various aspects of paddle sports, helped me to explore the many different disciplines involved and to “find” the one that suited me best. I am now a committed and reasonably capable white water paddler enjoying regular trips with others of all ages who love the sport and all the excitement and challenges that it offers.

What a great group of people and how lucky I was to meet them. My enthusiasm was so catching 3 generations of my family paddle with the club.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to give paddle sports a try, come and join us at STTC. One of the premier clubs in the North East.

Hi, as a new member to Stockton and Thornaby canoe club, I’ve found everybody to be very welcoming, helpful and always have excellent advice to give.

There’s always something going on whether it’s a social paddle or group trip I’d definitely recommend this club to anyone who’s thinking of joining.
